Non-ionic silver particles – antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal ingredient

Nonionic silver particles – what are they and how are their properties used in cosmetics? The primary function of silver in medical and cosmetic applications is its antibacterial action, but also its action against viruses and fungi. The medicinal properties of silver have been known for centuries. It was used to treat burns and wounds and to improve the quality of drinking water. Over time, the uses of silver and its compounds have become even wider.

Use of silver particles

The introduction of antibiotics has reduced the antimicrobial use of silver, but nowadays, among other things due to the problem of drug resistance of microorganisms, silver is returning to favour. It is still used in the form of minerals and organometallic compounds, but particular hopes are pinned on silver particles (Rai et al. 2009). Silver is widely used in the production of medicines (including dermatological ones), as well as products related to wound healing. There are even silver-infused socks designed for seniors and people with ringworm and various foot skin infections.

How do silver particles work?

The antimicrobial properties of silver are used in cosmetic products. A natural application is to stabilise products by replacing or reducing the concentration of preservatives. Silver may be effective in anti-acne preparations. Efficacy in other skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis has been indicated (Gajbhiye and Sakharwade, 2016).

The safety of silver use remains an important issue. Studies indicate that, using formulations with the right parameters, the application of silver particles is completely safe. These parameters are primarily particle size and homogeneity. Chantarelle uses particles obtained by physical (mechanical) methods with very high chemical purity. This completely safe formula allows the best effects to be obtained. Such high quality dermocosmetics with silver particles are the products in the Chantarelle range.
