Staphylococcus aureus – plants in cosmetics

Clustered Coneflower (Cimicifuga racemosa) this perennial plant grows up to 1-3 m and belongs to the buttercup family. The flowers are creamy white in colour, showy and have an unpleasant scent. The spittlebush is native to North America. It can be found in forests with humus-rich soil and on mountain slopes covered with sparse vegetation. The plant has been included as a protected species in the US due to its devastating exploitation over the past five years.

The root and rhizomes of this plant are most commonly used for extracts and infusions. It mainly contains triterpene glycosides. The extract extract extracted from spittlebush also contains phenolic acids (caffeic, ferulic, isoferulic and fucinolic acids) and cimicifugic acids. Among other active substances, we can mention tannins, resin, phytosterols and essential oil.

Medicinal uses of cimicifuga

The generic name cimicifuga comes from the Latin cimis=”insect” and fugio=”to flee”, from where it is inferred that an insect repellent attribute was given to this plant. In natural medicine, bedbug is attributed with antirheumatic, antispasmodic, menstrual regulating, anti-migraine and anti-stress effects. In addition, small doses of bedbug have been used to combat ailments related to pregnancy, labour pain, headaches and depression. Its official introduction into medical practice was in 1828, when the Turner Physiomedical School, recommended it as a blood pressure-lowering, sedative and anti-inflammatory.

It is mainly due to its antioxidant properties that this extract is used in anti-ageing preparations. Stinkweed nullifies DNA damage to cells caused by harmful UV radiation. Its anti-inflammatory and anti-irritant properties support atopic and sensitive skin. Inflammatory lesions are very often accompanied by swelling, which is also nullified by this plant.

The effective draining effect of the extract has also been proven. Studies have been conducted on women with complaints of lymphatic stasis in the eye and cheekbone areas. As a result of using the extract, micro-circulation levels are increased and swelling in these areas is reduced. There are also irrefutable research results that demonstrate the nullifying properties of collagenase and hyaluronidase activity. As a result of such therapy, the level of breakdown of natural collagen and hyaluronic acid in the skin was significantly reduced, delaying the ageing process.
