In the competition “My difficult skin: sensitive, reactive, atopic, with allergy symptoms”, we asked what are the biggest problems with this skin type? At what time of year are they greater, what factors exacerbate the symptoms? What ways do you have of soothing over-reactive skin? The competition was organised together with the CzasNaZmiane.pl portal. Below you will find a selection of statements describing how you care for sensitive skin, allergic skin and skin with AD symptoms…
My skin is dry and sensitive, and also suffers from acne and redness caused by allergies to the furry animals I live with. Choosing cosmetics is quite a problem for me, but thanks to this I have started to take more interest in their composition. For me, facial dryness and loss of moisture during the day or night intensifies in winter (and I use creams at least twice a day), while allergy-induced redness and acne worsen in summer. I avoid cosmetics that contain mainly alcohol, as I know this further dries out my skin. I look for products that contain ingredients that soothe skin inflammation, redness and help keep my skin moisturised for as long as possible. Skincare for me is a whole system of tasks that I am constantly improving. I currently start my day by massaging my face with a scrub brush, which acts as a scrub for dry cuticles and prevents acne breakouts. Next I use hyaluronic acid oil to moisturise my skin by massaging my face with it for 4 minutes, then I rinse it off with 2 minutes of lukewarm water, which also helps to moisturise my skin, and then I use a gentle aloe vera foam scrub and massage my face for 4 minutes, then rinse it off. After drying my face, if I have time, I apply a moisturising and redness-soothing mask with clay and bergamot. If I don’t have time, I go straight to the next step – I wipe my face with cotton wool and toner with aloe vera and grape seeds. In winter, I also use a milk. Next, I apply a vitamin C serum to my face, which helps to reduce and lighten redness and also speeds up the healing of acne. Then I apply an aloe vera lotion, which moisturises the skin and also helps reduce redness. Then I use a day cream, and here I often change the manufacturers and the composition of the product – one time it is a cream with aloe vera, one with hyaluronic acid, and recently I have also tried a chia seed cream. After applying the cream, I use a BB with SPF45 and PA+++ and avoid being in the sun for long periods of time as this dries out the skin too much. In the evening I wash off my make-up with a green tea micellar lotion, then wash my face again with an oil and scrub. When the complexion is cleansed, I wipe my skin with a toner and apply serum and lotion again. At night, I choose creams with ingredients that help to regenerate the skin and keep it hydrated. I take advice from a dermatologist occasionally and not at all from a beautician. I look for products on my own that are suitable for my skin and how to use them. When I see positive results, I know it is worthwhile to delve into the subject of cosmetics myself. Female, age: 24
Since I was a child I have struggled with all kinds of allergies, the symptoms are not only on my skin, so I am under the constant care of an allergologist. I avoid fragrances in cosmetics, as they most often cause me to have an allergic reaction. The main problems for my skin are redness and dryness, which sometimes even leads to unsightly peeling. That’s why I try to moisturise my skin as much as possible on a daily basis, in the morning I usually apply 2 face creams, one heavily moisturising and the other with a filter as a make-up base. It’s hard for me to find the right fluid for my skin, sometimes I have to mix it with a moisturiser before I apply it so that I don’t develop an unsightly ‘crust’ on my skin, which further accentuates flaky skin and irritation. I use soothing creams at night. For washing, I use hypoallergenic soaps or baby formulas. For make-up removal, unscented micellar lotions work well for me. For body care, I use lotions with d-panthenol. In winter I notice an increase in symptoms, especially skin dryness, probably due to the heating and poorer diet. Female, age – 25 years
My sensitive and very dry skin all over my body and on the sides of my face requires special prevention to protect it from itching, erythema, roughness, cracking. I try to prevent skin lesions from forming in order not to treat them later. That is why I use a gentle, soothing, irritation-relieving gel to wash every day, and then apply an emollient lotion that moisturises and rebuilds the skin barrier and a cream to reduce itching and redness. The best results come from gently spreading the skincare products immediately after bathing, after drying the skin with a gentle towel. All the products I use contain a biomimetic complex to restore the natural balance and are from the same line, so as not to irritate the skin with a mixture and excess of different ingredients. I avoid detergents, including soaps, parabens, dyes, fragrances, which can cause inflammation. I avoid hot radiators, air-conditioning, smoky rooms from cigarettes, rapid temperature changes, do not go to the sauna, do not take hot baths, do not sunbathe. Underwear, clothing must be of natural, very fine fabrics. How and in what I wash is of great importance. Hypoallergenic powders, re-rinsing eliminates sources of skin irritation, as does wet wiping of dust in the flat, without the use of chemicals. Frequent airing of the flat, bedding prevents the proliferation of allergens and the development of AD. Sleeping in bedding that smells of wind and frost is an additional source of pleasure for me. Stress, haste and lack of outdoor exercise do not serve my difficult skin, while developing passions, relaxation and sports on sunny days – soothe and regenerate. So it is not the season that affects the intensity of its dysfunctions, but what the weather is like. I always protect the uncovered parts with cream and milk with a mineral filter against the sun’s harmful rays. I hydrate it from the inside by drinking a minimum of 1.5 litres of mineral water every day, and I strengthen it by eating vegetables and fruit. The goal of taking care of my skin on a daily basis is to eliminate frequent visits to specialists – the allergist and the dermatologist – from my life, and to keep my skin healthy and naturally beautiful. Female, 41
I have been struggling with sensitive skin problems for some time. A few years ago I started to take the sun very badly, I had to go to a dermatologist because I couldn’t cope with the irritation caused by overexposure to the sun. Redness, itchy patches of skin and pimples would appear. Since the sun irritation problems began, I have been using cosmetics with very high sun filters to prevent irritation. In addition, I look for irritation-relieving ingredients in cosmetics, and I often use dermocosmetics because of their richness in active ingredients. Female, 28 years old.
Hello, I am struggling to find the perfect boost for my sensitive 40+ body skin 🙂 For the last two years I have had frequent redness. During a checkup it turned out that I had hypertension. I started taking medication and the redness has reduced significantly. I use creams for sensitive skin because they serve me very well. Female, age range 40-45.
Morning. When I go from cold to warm and vice versa, I get red bumps. When I go out in the cold, I try to lubricate with oily, nourishing creams and it helps. Not so red. I can’t use moisturisers in winter. Plus I do masks in autumn and winter. Female, 27 years old
Personally, I went through different stages of atopic skin. In the first stage there was just redness, then pimples started appearing which progressed to large nodules. Fluid was no longer helping and I finally went to a dermatologist, who outlined a plan that worked for me. I was fine for a year, it worked, but I still go to the dermatologist all the time because the redness remains. Female, I am 34 years old.
My skin is sensitive skin. I try to use creams for this skin. I have had several treatments at the beautician. I also use masks. The best time of year for my skin is spring and autumn. Excessive sun and cold weather do not favour it. Female, over 30.
I think I have a sensitive skin problem. I haven’t consulted a doctor yet, because so far the symptoms are not very bothersome. When I don’t take care of my skin carefully, a feeling of facial skin tension, dryness and redness happens. I choose cosmetics for sensitive skin, soothing and moisturising. My skin responds very well to organic cosmetics with natural ingredients. I also try to help my skin with homemade masks made from natural ingredients. Masks with honey and oatmeal work very well for me. I haven’t noticed that the problems change in winter or summer. I am a woman, my age bracket is 25+
I have always had sensitive skin, but during menopause the symptoms of rosacea started to appear. First the erythema and then the pimples came on. I thought it was mature skin acne, but a visit to a dermatologist dispelled these thoughts. I use specialised preparations, ointments and creams. But all the time I have to be careful and watch myself that the lesions have worsened. Female, 50-60.
I used steroids for 3 years. Unfortunately the consequence of this is now skin problems. The beautician described my skin as sensitive and vascular and the dermatologist said that I have a predisposition to atopic skin. I use creams for my skin ailments, of course. Regular application produces results. I also have to watch out for weather changes. I use sunscreens in summer, although if I get a tan, I look better. Female, 20+
My biggest problem is redness and dry skin. Symptoms are exacerbated in the summer, probably when exposed to the sun. I avoid irritating ingredients and look for natural ingredients in cosmetics. For redness I look for ginseng, rutin, arnica. Plus cc creams with green pigment. I don’t go to a beautician or dermatologist. Woman 30+
I struggle with atopic dermatitis. I am looking for cosmetics with a simple formulation containing emollients. For body care, shea butter works well for me; for skin care, urea. Allantoin is also good. In winter, I use oilier preparations. Female, 25-30 years of age.
My skin is slightly vascular and I often get erythema on my cheeks in particular. I have a bigger problem with my skin in winter, when it starts to get cold I experience more discomfort. I use special creams and apply masks, but rather everything has a soothing effect. Female, 40+
I have reactive skin, I tolerate temperature differences badly, so I suffer from cold weather in winter and hot weather in summer. I try to take care of my skin myself, I use cosmetics for sensitive skin. I like cosmetics with aloe vera. As I often have dry and tight skin, I use as many moisturising products as possible, and after every shower I obligatorily use lotion or butter. I also try to protect my skin from the cold and the sun, using the right face creams with filters. Female, age range: 35+
I have been struggling with atopic skin for several years. At first I tried various creams, but nothing worked. It wasn’t until I went to a dermatologist, who prescribed special lotions and creams, that the appearance of my skin improved. I’ve also recently been to a nutritionist who took note of my complexion and advised me on what to eat and what to avoid. Female, 30+.
