Skin care around the eyes

How do you care for the delicate skin around your eyes? What factors affect it negatively? What are the best in-office cosmetic treatments? What cosmetics work well on the eyelids and under the eyes?

The eyes and their frame are one of the most important elements of a woman’s beauty. The skin around the eyes has no fatty lining and is only 0.5 mm thick, when in other parts of the face it is four times thicker. The skin in this area is therefore more delicate, sensitive and prone to irritation from poorly chosen cosmetic preparations and inappropriate home care. This is also where the first wrinkles, known as “crow’s feet”, form more quickly. Regardless of the season, the skin around the eyes is constantly exposed to the elements (harsh sun, wind, frost).

Most important factors negatively affecting the skin around the eyes

  • too little sleep;
  • too many hours in front of a computer screen, inadequate lighting, air conditioning;
  • environmental pollution, dust, pollen;
  • unhealthy diet (not enough fish, vegetables, fruit, fluids);
  • smoking;
  • unsuitable cosmetics (too strong, causing allergies);
  • no make-up removal in the evening;
  • long-term contact lens wear;

Most common skin problems around the eyes

Swollen eyes eye circles eye circles – occurs due to water accumulation in the tissues, lack of sleep, exhaustion or too much salt in the body. Puffiness also occurs due to lymphatic stasis or a hereditary tendency to accumulate fat cells in this part of the face. Other more serious causes that require consultation with a doctor include: circulatory disorders, kidney disorders.

Shadows from the eyes – arise due to lack of sleep, fatigue and stress, poor diet, lack of iron and vitamins, metabolic problems. The reason for their appearance may also have a genetic basis and be related to skin type – with thin and delicate skin, blood vessels are definitely more visible and it is these that create dark circles under the lower eyelid of the eye.

Wrinkles in the outer corners of the eyes, the so-called “crow’s feet”, can be a sign of strong facial expressions (they appear as early as in the twenties) or skin ageing. They are often caused by photoageing due to a lack of eye protection with suitable sunglasses and preparations with high UVA/UVB filters.

Principles of proper home care

Cleansing

It is necessary to remove make-up from the face and eye area very thoroughly in the evening. Avoid cosmetics containing soap and, if you have very sensitive skin, replace ordinary water with a specialised product designed for this type of skin. Absolutely no rubbing or stretching of the skin. Wet cotton pads or cotton wools (soaked in lotion, oil or make-up remover) are placed gently on the upper or lower eyelid and wait until the make-up starts to dissolve. Move the pad several times from the outer to the inner corner of the eye, discard it and then reach for another soaked pad. Repeat cleansing until – until the cotton pad is clean.

Moisturise/revitalise/regenerate

Apply preparations appropriate to the skin type to the eyelids and under the eyes: cream or serum. Gently pat the product into the skin around the eye, which will help to smooth out wrinkles:

– from the outer corner across the lower eyelid,

– from the inner corner across the upper eyelid.

The skin of people under 30 needs, above all, to be moisturised. People 30+ should choose formulations that also nourish and counteract facial and age-related wrinkles.

Herbal compresses
In home care, we can also use cold compresses of holly, tea, ivy, horsetail, lime – which have anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-edematous effects. Washing the eyes with teas of fennel, parsley, arnica, cornflower, lime will also have similar effects.
massages

For swelling, puffiness of the upper eyelid and under the eyes, gentle massages are recommended, which we can do ourselves while applying the cream – stroking and gently patting the skin around the eyes:

– from the outer corner across the lower eyelid,

– from the inner corner through the upper eyelid.

gel glasses

Before a so-called “big night out” or after a sleepless night, a cold gel compress (cooled firmly in the fridge beforehand) can be applied to swollen and puffy eyes.

Eyelashes and eyebrows

At-home treatments with special hair conditioning products for eyelashes and eyebrows are recommended – to strengthen and thicken them.

Lifestyle

It is very important to follow a few rules: plenty of sleep, walking outdoors, sun protection – sunglasses or high factor cream, avoiding stress and too many hours spent in front of a computer or TV screen.

Dieta

Rich in nutrients and vitamins.
