What do we know about lactobionic acid?
✓ Lactobionic acid belongs to the bionic acid group and is a combination of the polyhydroxy acid gluconolactone with the sugar galactose. Like other hydroxy acids, it has slightly exfoliating properties, but is devoid of irritant properties. Lactobionic acid is used for sensitive and dry skin, as well as vascular and erythematous skin. It is also used for the topical treatment of telangiectasia (dilated blood vessels) and rosacea.
✓ It has strong antioxidant properties – fights free radicals. Inhibits the action of metalloproteinases of the extracellular space of the epidermis therefore prevents the formation of wrinkles and sagging of the skin. Enhances repair mechanisms (by stimulating collagen synthesis), provides protection against the effects of UV rays.
✓ This acid additionally has a strong moisturising effect and the ability to bind water and form a protective layer on the skin surface, which makes the skin smooth and soft, and this strengthens the protective function of the epidermal barrier. Studies have confirmed a significant improvement in the mechanical parameters and texture of photo-aged skin and a significant increase in skin thickness. Lactobionic acid is used for regulation of sebum secretion in acne skin therapy.
✓ These treatments can be performed throughout the year because lactobionic acid does not cause a risk of hyperpigmentation. However, it is necessary to apply high UVA/UVB protection after each exfoliation treatment.
