How to make homemade antibacterial gel and antibacterial soap?

Home- made antibacterial gel and antibacterial soap are among the most frequently searched keywords on the Internet. Whether it makes sense to make such antibacterial cosmetics, we asked the cosmetic chemical technologist in charge of production at the Chantarelle laboratory.

 

Given the availability of ingredients in the shops and the methods we can use at home, making antibacterial soap ourselves does not make sense, as it is quite a complicated procedure. On the other hand, it is possible to make an antibacterial gel or spray, which has its drawbacks but will do the job.

 

Antibacterial gel and spray for hand disinfection to make at home

Making a very simple antibacterial gel is not a difficult task. If we have no other source of obtaining the cosmetic there is a point in making such a cosmetic ourselves. However, it should be borne in mind that it is not a permanent specificity. The septic alcohol molecules do not disperse evenly in the solution. We refer to this professionally as not being evenly dispersed in solution. In addition, there is the problem of the cosmetic’s instability and the evaporation of the alcohol, which loses its properties relatively quickly.

 

Antibacterial spray for disinfecting objects in the home

    • 70% ethyl alcohol (95% spirit)
    • 30% water
    • If we have tea oil with antibacterial action we add it at a concentration of 1%

Antibacterial hand gel

  • 70% ethyl alcohol (95% spirit)
  • Aloe vera gel in a ratio of 70:30
  • we can also add tea tree oil, lavender or orange oil at a concentration of 1%

The homemade antibacterial gel should be used within 1-2 months, for the reason that it no longer has an antibacterial effect afterwards. Given these facts, making the gel yourself on a daily basis will be quite an unprofitable venture, as it loses its properties quite quickly. An emergency is a good solution. Remember to use an alcohol concentration of at least 90%.

 

Home-made antibacterial soap

Making soap is much more difficult and it is better to buy a ready-made preparation than to experiment. This is because you will end up with a product that is chemically unstable and therefore does not fulfil its purpose. In laboratory conditions, soap making consists in obtaining a suitable substrate for antibacterial molecules, adding appropriate non-irritating preservatives and conditioning agents to avoid drying out the skin caused by the presence of alcohol. Without the right proportion of ingredients and the way they are combined, the cosmetic will delaminate.
