Enzymatic peeling is one of the most popular peels on the cosmetic market. Here you can also read about chemical peeling, mechanical peeling (scrub type) and exfoliation with AHA, BHA and other acids. There is a constant process of cell formation and death in our skin. New cells move towards the surface of the epidermis and there form a protective layer for the skin against dryness and harmful external factors.
These cells then die and flake off, and are replaced by new cells. This cycle of cell replacement lasts about 28 days. As the years go by, it is slower and the skin increasingly appears grey, rough and dry. This is why we help the skin with various exfoliation treatments – both in beauty salons and during home care.
Ezymatic peeling – mechanism of action
Enzyme peels dissolve cells thanks to active chemical or plant substances (e.g. bromelanin and papain). These substances enable dead skin cells to be got rid of by penetrating the stratum corneum, dissolving creatine and loosening intercellular connections. Enzyme peels have a smooth – cream-like consistency with no perceptible lumps.
The peeling is applied to the skin and left on for about 7-10 minutes, then washed off with water and the skin toned. In the beauty parlour, the peeling is usually performed under a wapozon (a device with steam directed at the skin to be treated). Under the influence of heat, enzymes dissolve the intercellular binder faster. This causes dead cells to break away and the skin to become smoother.
Enzyme peels are gentler than mechanical peels however, they are not recommended for those with rosacea symptoms or purulent lesions. On the other hand, they can be used for many other skin types such as:
- normal skin
- combination skin
- oily and oily skin
- mature skin, also with deep wrinkles and fine lines
- sensitive skin
- sensitive skin
- vascular skin
