Face serums – which ones to choose and how to use them?

Facial serum belongs to cosmetics that enrich daily home care. This means that serum is not used instead of a protective or moisturising day cream or instead of a regenerating night cream. Instead, it is a product that perfectly enhances the effects of basic cosmetic preparations.

In serums, the concentration of active ingredients is several times higher than in creams. Therefore, with the help of serums, it is possible to significantly improve the condition of the skin, restore its radiance, colour, reduce the number of wrinkles, reduce inflammation and normalise sebum production. The active ingredients in serums work precisely to address a specific skin problem, depending on the skin type and needs.

Serum types

Facial serums, due to their principle of action, can be divided into 5 groups:

  1. Peeling or exfoliating serums – their purpose is to regulate the keratinisation of the skin and, over time, renew the epidermis.
  2. Moisturising serum – a basic need for all skin.
  3. Therapeutic serums – to address a specific problem they are divided into:
    • depigmenting
    • acne-fighting
    • analysing sebum
    • vessel strengthening

  1. Antioxidant serum – important for any skin, especially after when exposed to UV rays. Such serums are also essential for those who live in big cities or smoke cigarettes and other stimulants.
  2. Rejuvenating serum – stimulates the skin to correct scarring changes at a young age or for rejuvenation at a more mature age.

Some concentrates combine different effects. Thus, a depigmenting serum can be both a rejuvenating serum and an antioxidant serum.

Methods of serum application

The serum can be in gel form or in emulsion form – a cream serum. The main difference is in its application. A cream serum is an independent cosmetic preparation that we can apply solo. On the other hand, there are more specific recommendations associated with a gel serum, namely:

    • It is usually applied before a moisturising skincare cream.
    • Some serums are so thick that they should be applied to damp skin for better distribution.
    • Serums are applied manually, in a patting motion. Do not apply it in a linear fashion as it may roll off.
    • After the serum has been applied, it should be applied to damp skin.
    • After the application of the gel serum, it is recommended to apply a day or night cream. The lipid (oily) part of the cream helps both to penetrate the ingredients more deeply and to prevent water evaporation from the serum.
    • Serum can be applied topically or to the entire face.

The facial serum can be used both in youth and in maturity, depending on the needs of the skin. For a visible stable effect, apply the highly concentrated facial serum daily, over a period of 2 weeks to 2 months. Repeat this series of applications 2-4 times a year, depending on the condition of the skin.
