Fragrance notes in cosmetology

In the process of human evolution, it would seem that the sense of sight has always played the greatest role. We eat food that looks nice, we fall in love with people who we think have perfect facial features and we buy products that have pretty packaging. However, we forget about another equally important sense, which is smell. According to many scientists, smell is the main sense that influences many of our decisions.

One of the most important taste sensations when eating our favourite foods is…. the smell. It is for this reason that, having a blocked nose, food tastes different, worse. When choosing a partner, the scent (pheromones) that emanates from each of us also plays a great role. A similar situation occurs when deciding to buy cosmetic products. Of course, the main criterion for choosing cosmetics is their range and type of action, but scent is one of the three main factors that influence the choice of a particular product. Composing a fragrance for cosmetics and perfumes is extremely important. A fragrance is made up of three notes, with each note having a different oxidation time. It is for this reason that a perfume just after being sprayed has a different scent than after 2 or 12 hours. Cosmetic products have three fragrance notes: a head note, a heart note and a depth note. The head note is the first scent we smell, because it oxidises the fastest and is usually the one that determines whether we like a product. For this, heart note is released after about 2 hours and gives character. On the other hand, the depth note is the fragrance that is perceptible even several hours after application. There are many fragrances used in cosmetics. Some can stimulate, others soothe, others evoke positive memories.

Scented aromas in cosmetology

Fragrance compositions are divided into:

    • floral – fragrances of flowers such as rose, orange, jasmine or violet, for example – subtle floral notes are present in the line: C’Modular Age
    • chypre – sometimes associated with aromatic glamour, this is often a blend of jasmine, oakmoss, citrus and bergamot. A delicate fragrance from the chypre family is present in the cosmetics lines Red Stop, Nutri Maxx.
    • aldehydic – an extremely distinctive fragrance, which is possessed by selected luxury perfumes, such as the CHANEL brand.
    • oriental – is a fragrance with exotic and warm notes, a combination of floral and woody. Such slightly oriental notes are perceptible in the preparations of the line Lift Peptango R.
    • citrus – the scent of orange, lime, mandarin or lemon. It is always fresh strong, stimulating. Such is the scent present in the Ideal Pure line.
    • fougere – is a decidedly masculine note, which is derived from the scent of fern, moss or lavender.
    • woody – another masculine aroma derived from sandalwood, patchouli or cedar.
    • tony-leather – fragrances that stimulate our senses. We associate them with warm hints of spices and smoke. Related to these, very delicate notes can be sensed in the Estrini.

The source of the fragrance can be a natural substance of plant origin, animal origin or a synthetic substance. Originally, most cosmetics had a specific fragrance because an extract from 1 or 2 plants was a cosmetic in itself. Therefore, orange extract did not require additional enrichment with a fragrance note. As the science of cosmetology developed, more ingredient-rich formulations were created, which also contained other substances such as thickeners, dyes and preservatives. Today, most creams contain a carrier, a preservative (natural or synthetic) and a number of active ingredients. The basic, base form of the product, although a full-fledged product in terms of its effect on the skin, is not relevant today. Base versions of products are unattractive in terms of colour and smell. They are most often grey, translucent or yellow-green, and their smell is more reminiscent of a laboratory than an elegant cream. For this reason, suitable fragrances and colouring substances are added, making the product attractive to our senses. The stimulation of the senses gives us the comfort of cosmetic preparations and a better feeling of well-being.

How are fragrances made for cosmetology?

Natural fragrances – of organic origin – are the most valued. Unfortunately, an incredible amount of product is needed to obtain them. For example, one bottle of perfume sometimes contains extract from as many as 500 roses! Due to the cost of the material, many companies use synthetic fragrances, which can be obtained much more cheaply and quickly. However, this carries certain risks. Some synthetic fragrances or colourings cause skin reactions in the form of rashes, hives and sometimes with prolonged contact can develop into atopic dermatitis. For this reason, it is advisable to use primarily natural ingredients in products for sensitive skin.

It is important to remember that creating fragrances is a great art. Many people compare it to creating music. Hence the expressions: “fragrance notes”, “fragrance composition”. Perhaps for this reason, some fragrances are timeless.
