Glycation and the ageing process
We now consume twice as much sugar as we need. How does excess sugar accelerate skin ageing? During the so-called glycation process the glycation process destroys the skin’s main support proteins, namely collagen and elastin, which provide the skin with its youthful appearance, elasticity and resilience. The glycation process in living organisms is complex, but particularly important are its end products known as “advanced glycation end-products” AGEs (Advanced Glycation End-Products). The acronym used is not coincidentally a reference to the English term for age and ageing.
