Low temperatures and strong winds have a drying and irritating effect on our skin. Rapid changes in ambient temperature, the so-called “thermal shock” – going from cold air to a strongly heated, air-conditioned room – are also harmful. Our skin definitely does not like such drastic and frequent temperature changes. This is why it is important to take special care of it in winter so that it remains beautiful and healthy.
How does the winter weather affect the skin?
In winter, our body needs to generate more heat to maintain its natural temperature. The protective effect of the skin’s natural hydro-lipid mantle decreases already below 10 degrees C, while very cold air successively destroys the weakened hydro-lipid mantle. Unprotected skin becomes increasingly dry and rough. With weather-sensitive skin, irritation and redness can occur. The skin’s elasticity is also weakened, resulting in a severe tightening and even burning sensation. The frost also shrinks the capillary walls and disrupts blood circulation, which can lead to the formation of so-called ‘spider veins’.
What face creams do we choose in winter?
However, our skin will maintain a beautiful and healthy appearance if we devote a little more time to it at this time of year. It is very important to use cosmetic strengthening and nourishing preparations that will create a protective coating and support the natural hydro-lipid mantle. Also, do not forget to check that your day cream contains UVA/UVB filters. After all, UV radiation also penetrates through the thick layers of winter clouds, and on the ski slopes, the intense sun can be just as damaging as in summer.
The skin reacts to the intense cold by contracting the adductor muscles and causing the so-called “goosebumps” effect, i.e. the hair to grow in a fine line. The natural defence mechanism is then the emptying of the sebaceous glands, which causes the skin to oil itself. Previously, it was thought that greasy creams should be used during the cold weather, but nowadays, they are not recommended even for people who take part in winter sports. If applied too greasily, the skin’s natural defences can be impaired and natural heat exchange and evaporation can be impaired. We therefore recommend the use of lighter creams with a high oil phase content, but which do not give the skin a strong greasy or sticky feeling. Day creams should be applied well in advance of exposure to frosty air, i.e. at least 20 minutes before going out, so that the product can be absorbed properly. When you return home from a frosty day, you should absolutely not “warm up” by rubbing or rapidly heating your skin, for example by sitting very close to a hot radiator or washing your hands with hot water. Let’s gradually warm up the most chilled parts of the body to avoid another “thermal shock”.
Protect the skin around the eyes and mouth
Let’s also remember special preparations to shield the extremely sensitive skin around the eyes and mouth from drying out. Special protection for the scalp and hair, hands and feet is also extremely important – this is not only important for those involved in winter sports. Let’s remember warm hats and gloves even when “popping out for a moment” to walk the dog or take out the rubbish. Smartphone users, unless they have special gloves for touchscreens, should avoid making phone calls outside when the temperature drops below 0 degrees Celsius. If you want to protect your feet from frostbite – forget stilettos and lightweight boots. Warm socks, preferably made of real wool, and insulated boots with a solid sole will be a much more sensible choice.
Winter diet for our skin
It is also advisable to strengthen and nourish the skin “from the inside”, with the help of a proper diet that must not lack protein, vitamins and micronutrients. We should drink plenty of mineral water, light teas and home-made compotes, which naturally moisturise our skin. When the body lacks water, the skin becomes dry, rough and less able to defend itself against the cold.
Care for a good climate in your home
It is highly recommended to humidify the indoor air on a regular basis, including when sleeping. There are many ways to do this, ranging from airing your home to purchasing a suitable electric humidifier. If the frost is not too severe, open the window for 1-3 minutes to allow the humidified air from outside to mix with the room air. Excellent natural humidifiers are plants, especially those with large leaves, as they gradually release the water taken from the soil into the environment. An alternative to an electric humidifier are ceramic containers hung on radiators, or ordinary pots in which we should constantly replenish the water level. And if we have already neglected to protect ourselves and our skin is in bad shape?
Treatments in beauty salons and special series of dermocosmetics dedicated to skin that is particularly susceptible to the cold weather can help.
