Bioactive peptides

This is because we want to take advantage of the modern solutions and conveniences that advances in science and technology give us. So we carry smartphones in our pockets, which are not only a phone and e-mail box, but also have many other functions and conveniences. The progress of science offers great opportunities and brings the discovery of ever new ingredients – also in cosmetology. Some of the most important are bioactive peptides.. But what are peptides? They are biological substances made up of amino acids – the building blocks of proteins. Proteins are polypeptides, i.e. peptides containing more than a hundred amino acid residues and characterised by a complex structure. However, proteins are perishable and cannot function for long outside their environment. We can therefore carry out at least part of the tasks of proteins using their smaller counterparts – peptides. This action of peptides is not a human invention – nature uses them in many ways – as signalling substances, influencing neurotransmitters or carriers (Lupo and Cole 2007). This is the path followed by science in the 21st century using peptides as advanced medicines and as bioactive substances in modern cosmeceuticals.

 

Biomimetic peptides

Today, dozens of peptides with diverse effects are used in cosmetics, and more are being discovered, prepared and studied in scientific laboratories. Such bioactive peptides can exhibit multiple actions. They have the advantage of targeting specific problems in our body. They are therefore powerful and very precise tools. Such peptides that resemble the structure and action of selected proteins or other substances are called mimetic peptides. Their action can involve skin proteins – they protect the extracellular matrix from the action of metalloproteinases and, by activating growth factors, stimulate collagen production, protect proteins from glycation, one of the mechanisms of ageing. Peptides can replace proteins such as botulinum toxin. (Zhang and Falla, 2009). But this is not the end of the possibilities – peptides can contain a variety of substances that are not amino acids. This allows them to increase their activity while maintaining their precision of action and durability. Such substances can be lipids with different activities (Kanlayavattanakul and Lourith 2010). Among the most advanced, retinoid analogues can be identified.

RetinoLike Peptide

A novel peptide with versatile multi-tasking action in anti-inflammatory, anti-ageing and anti-pigmentation activity. It exhibits the properties of retinoic acid, but does not give its burden. It is a retinoic acid equivalent with efficacy confirmed by medical clinical studies. Its efficacy in inhibiting the activity of pro-inflammatory cytokines has been confirmed. It has an anti-inflammatory effect and reduces the size of pores. It has an anti-ageing effect, reduces the number and depth of wrinkles, and combats the negative effects of sunlight. The ingredient has documented efficacy in inhibiting the synthesis of MMP-1 metalloproteinases and restoring adequate levels of procollagen I. In-vivo studies have shown that Retino-Pept visibly reduces existing wrinkles, and by influencing the melanogenesis process through inhibition of melanin synthesis and tyrosinase activity, it effectively reduces age spots and pigmentation disorders, lightens the skin and improves colour.

 

Synpeptide 2-Peptide

Low-molecular peptide complex (dipeptide) with targeted anti-wrinkle, smoothing, skin elasticity-enhancing effects. It strengthens the Dermal-Epidermal Junction (DEJ Dermal-Epidermal Junction), which has the task of maintaining the cohesion of the dermis and epidermis layers. The main components of the DEJ are collagen fibres types IV and VII and XVII and laminin V, ensuring that the two layers adhere tightly to each other. Synpept strengthens the integrity of the DEJ by enhancing intercellular communication with the DEJ’s building blocks, regulates the anisotropy of elastic fibres in the skin, increases skin cohesion restoring firmness and tone and smoothing out wrinkles. Synvel 3-Peptide

A low-molecular-weight neuropeptide that mimics the action of snake venom toxin. It works at the same level as botulinum toxin and is a non-surgical alternative to surgical injections. Smoothes out facial wrinkles by inhibiting the vibration of expressive muscles. It smooths and hydrates the skin and gives it a fresh, relaxed appearance. It blocks the body’s absorption of Na+, which in turn relaxes facial muscles and prevents the formation of expression lines (wrinkles). The peptide mimics the effects produced by the 22 amino acid peptide waglerin-1 present in the venom of the snake Tropidolaemus wagleri. The peptide works similarly to botulinum toxin injections. When used regularly, it produces very good results. An in vitro study showed that the peptide at a concentration of 0.5 mM reduced muscle tension by 82% in just 2 hours. The peptide therefore helps to relax muscles and makes the skin look smoother and relaxed. Like true botulinum toxin, the peptide blocks the muscle contractions that cause facial tension, and additionally prevents the contraction from occurring again, making wrinkles less visible. Reduces the depth of wrinkles by 52 to 82% after approximately 3 months of use.

Matrixyl 3-Peptide

Innovative very potent anti-wrinkle low-molecular peptide stimulates the synthesis of the 6 main components of the dermal matrix and dermal-epidermal junction (DEJ): collagen I, III, IV (and HSP47), laminin-5, fibronectin and hyaluronic acid. It improves the basic biomechanical parameters of the skin condition: skin hydration, density, firmness and elasticity, skin tone and facial oval, thus filling in wrinkles from within, also on the forehead and “crow’s feet”, producing a visible effect of smoother and fuller skin.
